The Santa Paula JV squad beat Bishop Diego 21-20 in a hard fought game at the Ventura College sports complex Friday.

Oscar Cancino had a great game with close to 200 yards receiving, and Noah Magana rushed for a touchdown and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.  Tight end Alex Barrera had the other score for Santa Paula.  The Cardinal defense was led by Johnny Aguayo who forced two fumbles and recovered both of them.

“I have been telling the players all year that we need to play 48 minutes of football in order to win the game, we did that against a very tough Bishop Diego Team,” said Coach Justin Schmidt.

The game was at a stalemate in the first quarter until Bishop managed a touchdown and two-point conversion with 3:30 left in the quarter.  Not to be outdone Santa Paula’s Magana answered with a TD, returning a kickoff the length of the field.

Bishop jumped ahead early in the second quarter.  It was back and forth contest until near the end of quarter when Barrera hit the end zone, tying the game.

The third quarter was a standoff and in the fourth quarter Santa Paula jumped ahead 21-14.  Bishop responded a few minutes later but a missed extra point kick gave Santa Paula the win.

The Santa Paula JV is 1-2 and travels to Hueneme High School this Friday at 4:00pm.
