Optimist Club Halloween Parade draws hundreds of costumed kids

Hundreds of Santa Paula children showed up Saturday to take part in the annual Halloween Parade, an event that spooked the sponsoring Optimist Club when they feared they might have to cancel the procession. But the crowd of goblins, princesses, super heroes and witches were able to parade due to donations by Mayor Fred Robinson and Councilman Jim Tovias, who contributed the approximately $600 cost to cover newly imposed city fees. Robinson and Tovias were on hand Saturday when the children and parents marched, led by a Santa Paula Police vehicle and followed by the Isbell Middle School Band.

Joan and Frank Brommenschenkel of Ventura were in the crowd of onlookers. “It’s my first time at the Halloween Parade,” and Joan said she was prompted to attend “because of the close call it had. I think the city should pay for these things for the community, especially as these groups always donate so much” to city programs and other nonprofit projects and activities.

The Brommenschenkels were among a small group of people standing on the corner of East Main and Davis streets who applauded and cheered as the costumed children passed, and Joan said she wished more spectators would get involved in showing the youngsters their appearance was appreciated.

Bill Grant said the Kiwanis Club was handing out candy to all the children who took part in the procession when it ended at Veterans Memorial Park.

The club, he noted, “spends hundreds of dollars each year” to make sure each child who marches in the parade gets a sweet. And if there is any candy left over, Grant said it is donated to the city recreation department for the annual Halloween trick-or-treat event held at the Community Center.

Costumes were prejudged before the parade at Ebell Park so winners could take their rightful place and show off their prizes as they marched. Winners were:
