Lady Cardinal Softball moves to the Quarter Finals

The Santa Paula Lady Cardinal softball team moved on to the Quarter Finals of the CIF playoffs with a convincing victory over Academy of Academic Excellence 4-0.

On a rather warm and sometimes windy Santa Paula field the Cardinals held off Academy several times with Miranda Magana on the mound.  Magana allowed four hits with six strikeouts.

In the first inning Academy threatened to take the lead. The game started out right with a pop out to the pitcher then the next two batters got hits and then a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. A line out to the second base (Samantha Rodriquez) and then catching the runner at third for the last out ended the inning with no score. In all the Cardinals had 3 double plays during the game to keep Academy scoreless.

Bottom  of  the first the Lady Cardinals leadoff  hitter Alyia Alamillo singled to right and after the right fielder missed the ball she ended up on third base. The next hitter Felicia Magana popped out to second. Andrea Payne struck out. Miranda Magana hit a grounder to first ending the inning.

The top of the second inning Academy threatened again after the first two batters of the inning struck out. Then Miranda Magana walked the next two batters putting runners in scoring position. Magana struck out the next batter for the third out.

The bottom of the second inning the Cardinals went out 1, 2, 3 with Savannah Larson grounding to short, Samantha Rodriquez bouncing back to the pitcher and was tagged out. Marissa Ramos stuck out for the third out.

Top of the third inning the first batter for Academy grounded back to the pitcher then the Academy pitcher had a solid hit to center. The inning ended with ball hit back to  Miranda Magana a throw to the second baseman and on to first for a double play.

Bottom of the third the first batter for the Cardinals Angelica Arana bounced back to the pitcher and was tagged out. The next batter Cierra Hernandez was on board with an error by Academy. Alyia Alamillo then hit a fly ball to center for the second out and ending the inning was a ground ball to third by Felicia Magana.

The top of the fourth for Academy was a 1, 2, 3, inning with a lineout to first, popup to the pitcher and a strikeout.

The bottom of the fourth Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard with poor play by Academy. The inning started with Andrea Payne walking and taking second on a passed  ball. The next batter Miranda Magana struck out but was safe at first when the catcher misplayed the pitch. Savannah Larson then hit a ground out scoring Payne and putting Magana on second base. The next batter Samantha Rodriquez hit a ground ball to short catching Magana off second base. Magana was caught in a rundown and eventually was safe at third with Rodriquez moving to second. Then Magana scored on a passed ball by the catcher giving the Cardinals their second run. Marissa Ramos was next at bat and grounded to the third scoring Rodriquez from third giving the Cardinals a three nothing lead, then Angelica Arana struckout to end the inning.

The top of the fifth Academy again threatened to score with the first batter of the inning grounding out short to first. The next batter walked and then a hit followed putting two runners on base. The inning ended with a lineout to first and caught the Academy runner at first to end the top of the fifth.

The bottom of the fifth the Cardinals scored their final run with Cierra Hernandez leading off and struckout. Alyia Alamillo then singled to center. Felicia Magna laid down a perfect bunt and was safe at first when the ball was overthrown putting Alamillo on third. The next batter Andrea Payne grounded back to the pitcher scoring Alamillo. The last batter of the inning Miranda Magana lined out to short ending the inning.

Top of the sixth Academy again threatened the Cardinal lead. The opposing pitcher walked then a ground out putting a runner on second. A hit to right field was played quickly holding the runners to first and third. The inning came to an end with a ground out to third and a strikeout.

The bottom of the sixth was quiet for the Cardinals with Savannah Larson grounding to second, Samantha Rodriquez struck out, Marissa Ramos walked, and then Angelica Arana grounded out to short.

The top of the seventh Academy went out quickly ending the game. A lineout to short, a walk, a strikeout, and a lineout to first ending the game with a Cardinal victory 4-0.
