Santa Paula Girls bring home the gold from weekend wrestling tournament

The Santa Paula Girls Wrestling Team headed to San Diego this past weekend to wrestle in Steele Canyon’s “Ladies of Steele” Team Dual Tournament.  

There were 12 teams that attended, including powerhouses Pacifica (Oxnard), Panorama City, Baldwin Park, Albany, host school Steele Canyon, and 2-time State Champions West Covina.  Santa Paula had a tough draw and wrestled Mt. McGrath 1st, and then West Covina.  

Coach Mark Lopez said, “Santa Paula wrestled incredibly tough, and eventually pulled out the win over West Covina to advance to the finals against Pacifica, Panorama City, and Steele Canyon.”  After close wins over both Pacifica and Panorama City, Santa Paula faced Steele Canyon in the finals and took the team title by a close score of 42  to 39.  The team finished 5 - 0 overall.  

This is the first win for Santa Paula in the upper division at Steele Canyon, and as Coach Lopez stated, “Everyone wrestled amazingly well, girls stepped up, others wrestled tough outside of their usual weight class and with all of their heart to ensure a victory for the team.  I’m extremely proud of all of them and they deserved this win.”
