Santa Paula Fire was among the responders to a wind-whipped blaze that scorched more than an acre of hillside brush Friday, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The fire was reported January 18 at about 9:25 a.m. in a rugged area off Balcom Canyon Road, between Santa Paula and Fillmore, located close to the south end of the canyon near Somis’ Bradley Road.

Two-lane Balcom Canyon Road was shut down in both directions between Bradley and South Mountain roads after fire crews arrived and found about a half-acre of brush being driven up a steep hillside by the wind. About 80 Ventura County, Santa Paula, Fillmore and state firefighters battled the blaze, as well as a Ventura County Sheriff’s helicopter that first took two hand crews to the site and then dropped water on the fire.

The blaze burned 1.2 acres before it was fully contained and declared out by about 12:30 p.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
