The 3rd grade classrooms of Grace Thille Elementary, Barbara Webster Elementary and Blanchard Elementary schools were the recipients of a visit from a local author, Elaine Clark Aldrete this week. Mrs. Aldrete has written a book, at the 3rd grade reading level, about type-2 diabetes. The book has a summary in Spanish for the parents of children who may not speak English themselves, as well as activities to help the readers remember the lessons learned from the story.

Mrs. Aldrete visited the classes of each school and gave each student a signed copy of her book. It is her desire to open a conversation between students and parents about this disease.

Mrs. Fennell, principal of Grace Thille Elementary, was very happy that her school was selected to receive the gift of a visit as well as the books for each student. She is looking forward to this becoming an annual event.

A teacher at Blanchard Elementary wrote: “Dear Mrs. Aldrete, It was a nice treat to have met you. Thank you for coming to our class today. My class got really interested into the topic even after you left. I’m so glad you are presenting your book to our kids. They need to learn as early as possible about diabetes. You are a blessing to our community. Thank you and hope to see you next year. Ms. Escalante”
