Collin Yelich’s (UNLV) two out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring Jared Patterson (Chicago State) broke up a 1-1 tie with the defending National Champion Santa Barbara Foresters and helped the Santa Paula Halos improve to 3-1 in California Collegiate League play and 8-1 overall in the 2013 summer season with their 2-1 win.

In a classic pitchers duel, Halos starter Steven Farnsworth (College of the Canyons) scattered two hits over his seven innings of work and gave up only one run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Doug Christie (Hawaii Pacific University) earn the win pitching two scoreless innings.

The Foresters staked a 1-0 lead in the first inning after two walks, a wild pitch, and Ryan O’Hearn’s sacrifice fly. Santa Barbara pitchers kept the Halo bats in check until the fifth inning when Nick Murphy (LA Pierce) lead off with a walk and was followed by a Jeff Paschke (USC) infield single. After a wild pitch advanced both runners Johnny Brontsema’s (UC Irvine) RBI ground out Scowd Murphy to tie the game at one.

The Foresters threatened in the eighth and ninth innings but spectacular defensive plays helped the Halos. With no out in the top of the eighth and a runner on third base, Nick Murphy threw out the go ahead run at the plate on a would be sacrifice fly and in the top of the ninth, Brontsema ended the game with his spectacular play on a would be base hit to centerfield with the tying run on third base.
