The Santa Paula Police Reserves Unit is hosting the multi-agency Reserve Officer of the Year Awards dinner at the Community Center, where SPPD Reserve Officer Mike Levy will be honored.

According to coordinator Reserve Lt. Brad Tallent, reserve peace officers from Port Hueneme Police, Ventura County Sheriff’s, Oxnard Police and Ventura Police will also be honored at the December 4 dinner, which starts at 6 p.m. at the Community Center, 530 W Main St.

“Each of five Ventura County law enforcement agencies has selected one outstanding officer to receive this honor,” and Tallent said the evening will also include a special salute with honors for Senior Officer Don Elliot.

All former graduates are welcome to help honor Elliot, a 30-plus year veteran instructor at the Ventura County Police & Sheriff’s Reserve Academy.

Due to limited seating reservations are required, tickets are only $15 and may be paid for at the door; . The Santa Paula Firefighters Association’s BBQ Team will prepare the barbecued tri-tip and chicken dinner.

Tallent said it is easy to ascertain why Levy is being honored as the SPPD Reserve Officer of the Year.

“Mike was hired immediately upon his January 2007 graduation from the Ventura County Reserve Academy.

“Immediately Mike became one of our most active reserve officers,” who continued to serve the Reserve Academy as a Tac Officer for two years.

Tallent said Levy, who was promoted to SPPD Reserve Sergeant in 2010, “Is one of very few reserves” that is a member of the SPPD SRT (Special Response/SWAT) team.

In addition, Levy has been “extremely generous with both his time and materials. Not only is Mike an active and knowledgeable reserve officer in terms of time spent with the department, he has also donated the use of vehicles,” utilized by the SRT Team including the armored Dragoon and a Humvee transport vehicle.

“Mike,” said Tallent, “is an exemplary reserve officer and more than deserving to be named our 2013 Santa Paula Police Reserve Officer of the Year.”

Tallent said he is also pleased that SPPD is hosting the event in Santa Paula as, “It give us a chance to show off the community.... “
