On Thursday night, December 5th, 150 second through fifth grade students and their parents from Glen City and McKevett schools came to Glen City’s auditorium to experience Science at its best!

The Santa Paula Unified School District hosted the Discovery Center for Science and Technology to come in and bring over 25 hands-on science activities for the young students.  Some of the experiments were: electricity which lit up when you completed a circuit, magnetic canons, live earthworms, water experiments, gooey molecular mania, roto-copters, mystery smells, bubbles and many more.  Mr. Post, a teacher at Glen City, brought his telescope and the children looked at the craters on the moon and then they spied Jupiter with its many moons.

Approximately 60 Santa Paula High School students and 20 other adults volunteered their services for the event.  The high school students, dressed in lab coats, were amazingly fabulous as they helped all the elementary students with the experiments, questioning and guiding them to the correct answers.  The high school students were interested, thoughtful and appeared to be mini teachers. The parents who accompanied the young students couldn’t keep the smiles from their faces.  They kept telling us, “Thank you, for bringing this science night for my children. We love it!”

There will be two more Family Science Nights for the other elementary schools.  On January 16th, it will be held at Blanchard School for the Blanchard and Bedell students.  The last one will be on February 13th at Barbara Webster School for the Barbara Webster and Thille students.  This is a great experience for the students and one that shouldn’t be missed.
