Mary Janette Teague Bucknell Mary Janette Teague Bucknell, a member of a pioneer Ventura County family, died on Friday, June 7, 2002 at the age of 88, in Santa Paula. The daughter of Pansy Brewster and Dana L. Teague, granddaughter of noted photographer J. C. Brewster, and direct descendant of Elder William Brewster, Mary was born in Santa Paula on December 8, 1913. In 1935, while attending Chaffee College in Ontario, California, she met and married Charles Robert “Chuck” Bucknell. The couple lived in Ontario until 1943, when the death of Mary’s mother caused them to return to Santa Paula so that she could care for her father. After her father’s death, Mary and her family continued to live in Santa Paula, where they eventually owned and operated an avocado ranch.Along with the ranch, Mary, a graduate of UCLA, worked as a medical laboratory technologist at Ventura General Hospital. In 1975 Mary’s husband passed away, and she continued with her work at the hospital. After her retirement, Mary’s intelligence, independence and strong-willed nature continued to serve her well and enabled her to remain in charge of her avocado ranch until 1997, when failing health led to her admittance to Santa Paula Healthcare.Mary is survived by her daughters, Sarah Galloway of Cypress, Linda Hendricks of Fort Bragg, and Janette Muldoon of Crescent City; her son Charles Robert Bucknell, Jr. of Chico; her brother and sister-in-law Robert Dana Teague and Ruth Reddick Teague of Santa Paula; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah Teague Smith, who died in May of 2002.The family wishes to thank all of those at Santa Paula Healthcare who gave such loving care and attention to Mary Bucknell. A special thank you also goes to Mary’s granddaughter Judy Phelps, who provided much comfort to Mary during her later years.
