By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Main Street business found itself outside when a contractor accidently punctured a gas line, according to a Santa Paula Fire Department official. Two days later, a small fire was reported in the Oaks area, believed to have been started by accident. The incident occurred July 23rd, when a contractor was working inside Body Glove, located at the corner of 12th and Main streets.According to SPFD Acting Chief Rick Araiza, the incident occurred at about 2:38 p.m. “A contractor was bolting some large shelving into the concrete flooring and hit a gas line,” leading to evacuation of approximately 60 employees. The employees were directed to a parking lot located at the corner of Oak and Main streets as the fire department and Gas Company were summoned to the scene.“The building is 5,000 square feet and everyone was evacuated upon our arrival,” AFC Araiza noted.
Body Glove is owned by Hely & Weber Orthopedic, he added.“It was potentially a very dangerous call, but the gas line was secured without incident and the fire department ventilated the building. After about an hour, everyone was able to go back to work. . .except the contractor,” AFC Araiza noted. Two days later, on July 25th at about 6 a.m., the SPFD received a call to a small brush fire near the corner of Cliff and Forest drives in the Oaks area of the city.“It appeared to be an unattended warming fire,” that has spread to a small area, said AFC Araiza, and was quickly extinguished.SPFD personnel were able to leave the scene about 40 minutes after the fire was reported.“Other than a few of these scattered incidents, we’ve just been responding to a lot of medical calls,” said AFC Araiza. “. . .and we’d like to keep it that way.”
