Lions bite too much for Cardinal varsity

The Oaks Christian Lions overpowered the Santa Paula Cardinal boys’ varsity on the basketball court Tuesday night, winning by a score of 99-37. The Cards ran into trouble from the older and bigger team from the opening whistle. The Lions took an early 28-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. At the half, Oaks Christian had a 51-18 edge.There were some individual bright spots for the Cards. Toby Baca led Santa Paula in scoring with 15 points. Aaron Argueta had seven points, along with nine rebounds, two steals and four blocks. Angel Camarillo recorded two points, and had eight rebounds, one assist, two steals and three blocks.The Cardinal frosh and JV teams had a much easier time of it against the Lions. The freshmen won their game, 53-33 and the JV squad took their game, 49-47.Eddie Marin was the leading scorer for the frosh with 14 points. Bobby Benavides added 10 points. Richard Hernandez had nine and Johnny Carrillo and Johnny Urrutia each had eight points.
The JV contest was a nail-biter. Both teams were pretty evenly matched and the scoring stayed very close until the end. At the half the Lions only had a two-point lead, with a last second basket at the buzzer.Nathaniel (Bubba) Maynard led the Cards with 12 points and five assists. Froylan Valdovinos had 11 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Nene Alamillo recorded eight points and had 13 rebounds off the bench.
