With CIF playoff hopes still alive, the Lady Cardinals soccer team almost pulled off an upset of the Nordhoff Rangers. Scoring on a direct kick from 18 yards out, Raquel Gonzalez put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the 10th minute of the match. This seemed to frustrate the Rangers, who committed a high number of fouls trying to contain the Cards. Nordhoff finally tied the match in the 30th minute of play and scored again in the last minute of the first half, taking a 2-1 lead. Santa Paula challenged frequently in the second half, giving up only one more goal for a final score of 3-1.The two-goal difference was a big improvement over the 6-0 beating the Lady Cardinals endured earlier in the season. “This was a superior outing against a great Nordhoff program and the girls never stopped believing they could pull out a win,” said Coach Michael Gonzalez. “Love that spirit.”Ramona Sanchez and Alexis Harvey were in the net for the Cardinals combining for 10 saves. The JV girls lost their match against the Rangers, 2-0.
The JV squad played a solid tactical game, giving up one goal on a direct kick from a penalty and one heart-breaking unlucky goal.Kristen Easley was in the net for the Lady Cards and recorded eight saves. “One couldn’t help but feel that the Rangers came in to Cardinal City expecting a 6-0 victory,” said Gonzalez. “The fact that it was only 1-0 at the half created a notable tension and anxiety on the Rangers’ bench and field. The Cardinals never stopped playing like the score was 0-0 and killed the remaining Ranger attacks, while mounting their own counterattacks.”
