For weeks the Ventura County Fire Protection District has been setting fires in Adams Canyon, events that have led up to the big burn that will take place this week.On Wednesday, Sept. 17th, the VCFPD is planning a major burn in the 5,400-acre canyon, located about four-and-a-half miles from Santa Paula’s downtown. The Sept. 17th major burn is planned to clear brush from about 950 acres of the canyon, a scorch that which “will undoubtedly generate much smoke and a lot of inquiries,” said Santa Paula Fire Chief Paul Skeels. The VCFPD has already had two burns in the canyon on a much smaller scale: in mid-August about 300 acres were set ablaze in the canyon sending billows of black smoke into the air.Due to weather conditions the smoke did not dissipate sending many people to their phones to report a major brush fire in the canyon.Although the SPFD had been notified that the burn would take place there was no time to contact the media to announce the burn.
Another controlled burn was conducted on Sept. 2nd.Such burns are conducted to remove highly flammable dry brush under carefully controlled conditions so the fire does not spread. In addition, the burns in Adams Canyon are good for the local cattle industry, which benefits from new grass growth, a SPFD spokesman said earlier this month.Controlled burns are just that: fire personnel at the scene include engine companies, hand crews and helicopters as well as personnel from the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District who monitor the burn and its impact on the environment.911 Emergency Dispatchers have been notified that they will probably receive an upswing in fire reports during Wednesday’s controlled burn.
