By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesWhen you want a great backdrop for photographs of women who ride Harleys for a fundraising calendar, the best place to be is Santa Paula. And almost 50 Hogs roared into town on Nov. 16th did just that, cruising in for the photo shoot and then cruising out when the Santa Paula posing was done for the day.The Ventura County Chapter of the Harley Owners Group selected the Depot and the St. Francis Dam Monument for photographs that will possibly be featured in their 2004 fundraising calendar.Big Hogs and even bigger Hogs lined up on Railroad Avenue on Sunday for the photo shoot and passers-by came to an abrupt halt when they saw the rows of parked Harleys, the sun reflecting from the heavy chrome of the pipes and accessories. Most members of the Harley owners’ organization were decked out in leather jackets and vests with the famous Harley logo and many sported leather chaps.
Female riders ranged in age from the young to comfortably boomer and they cheered each time a successful shot was taken outside the Depot.Several riders said they visit Santa Paula often on weekend rides, enjoying the sights and especially the St. Francis Dam Monument, “The Warning,” that depicts two motorcycle officers racing throughout the lower lands of the city to warn residents of the approaching 1928 disaster. A few Harley owners said they had visited the Santa Paula California Oil Museum for the exhibit of rare Italian racing motorcycles.Harley owner Manuel Martinez of Oxnard said the calendar would be the third that the club has created as an annual club fundraiser. The Ventura County Chapter of the Harleys Owners Group meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the VFW Post on Market Street in Ventura.“We have about 750 members,” and Harley owners living throughout Ventura County are welcome to attend a meeting and join up with other Hog-lovers, said Martinez.
