By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe upcoming 21st Annual Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group Home & Garden Tour – this year featuring a special Art Walk in The Oaks – and Union Bank were highlighted at the February Good Morning Santa Paula! The Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event, held at Logsdon’s at the Santa Paula Airport, was hosted by Union Bank with Jackie Crave.Crave introduced bank staff in the audience and noted that although Union is in a highly competitive market where many financial institutions offer the same services, Union stands out for its work with business and business property owners as well as general loan programs.“ . . .what Union offers that is different is company benefits,” where employees can open a free checking account and benefit in other ways. In addition, direct deposit is available and “it’s a super thing,” noted Crave. “All this is available to the employee of the company but it doesn’t cost the company anything. . .we’ll go out to the business and open account, make it easy to be a great employer with no cost to you.”Union also offers a diversified loan program and has an agricultural business group, she noted, but “what is really special and best about our bank is all of our people.”Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group holds two major fundraisers each year, noted Board Director Don Olivier, and the 21st Annual Home & Garden Tour – this year featuring a special Art Walk in The Oaks – is next month.
“Mark you calendar for Sunday, April 18,” to take the tour and, in turn, support the array of free services offered by Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group.Tickets are now available for the event, and “Marilyn Harvey is the chairwoman of this illustrious program this year, as she was last year,” when it rained early on tour day “but people still came out,” noted Olivier.2004 is the first year that the organization is seeking sponsorships for the tour, available at different monetary levels that feature varying sponsor rewards including varying levels of advertising and free tour tickets, said Olivier.“Anyone interested in sponsoring see me, or call the Hospice office at 525-1333,” he added.Olivier introduced Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group board directors in the audience including President Cathy Barringer, “known all over the county for her many worthwhile projects; she started the Hospice in this community and the river valley,” an important component the organization’s success, said Olivier.Harvey stressed that Hospice has many facets: “Many take for granted that Hospice is for the life-end process, and I remind them that we have a van to transport people,” to medical appointments. Other programs target “materials and services for those taking care of somebody in the home, all available without cost,” a medical equipment loan program, library, support groups, meal preparation, caregiver respite and a “therapy pet” program for area nursing homes, among other services.“Before you say Hospice is for other people and write it off,” remember that Hospice can be a vital source of services for those who do not have a family member facing life-limiting illness, Harvey noted.
