SPHS honors top accelerated readers

Santa Paula High School’s top point earners of the Accelerated Reader Program for the 2003-04 school year were acknowledged at a special dinner held in the school library on May 27.

Santa Paula High School’s top point earners of the Accelerated Reader Program for the 2003-04 school year were acknowledged at a special dinner held in the school library on May 27. In addition to the top 40 students and their parents, SPUHS District Trustee Christina Urias and Superintendent Dr. David Gomez were in attendance.“This year we had more participation in the Accelerated Reader Program than in previous years,” commented Librarian Celia Ward. The Accelerated Reader Program is a computer-managed reading program that awards students points upon successful completion of comprehension quizzes based on individual books.After dinner and door prizes, certificates for the top 40 students were distributed. The top 10 winners also received gift certificates courtesy of sponsor Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation.“Some of our students read amazingly challenging books this year,” commented teacher Annette Halpern. Sophomore Kristin Easley distinguished herself by reading “Les Miserables,” “The Grapes of Wrath,” and “War and Peace” along with six other books, earning 278 points. Junior Jacob Thompson read a variety of titles, including “Exodus,” “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and “The Stand,” resulting in 424 points. The number one reader, Kenneth Buchan, passed 33 quizzes on books including the “Redwall” series and “Lord of the Rings” trilogy among many others, and earned 471 points.
The top 10 readers for the 2003-04 school year are: Kenneth Buchan, Rosalina Villalon, Jacob Thompson, Kimberly Ashby, Kristin Easley, Sharon Kim, Yadira Hernandez, Maria Medina, Javier N. Magana, and Leah Kolbeck. Following close behind were Vanessa Zurita, William Thompson, Berenice Ruiz, Ashley Lopez, Lindsay Shield, Nicholas Molina, Adrianna Moreno, Elizabeth Bichl, Lorena Moreno, and Evelyn Oehmke.Additional top readers included Martha Ramirez, Teodoro Navarro, Travis Marella, Irene Moreno, Mercedes De La Riva, Abigail Lugo, Angelo Parra, Frank Lovio, Jessica Valdovinos, and Heather Larmon. Rounding out the list were Rigoberto Rico, Samantha Alonso, Daniel Kolbeck, Luz Gonzalez, Michael Jue, Miguel Molina, Diego Rico, Edith Guzman, Ana Lira, and Daniel Kim.
