By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesWhen you see Santa sitting on a bench under the Moreton Bay Fig, casting his twinkling eyes on the Depot you know you’re at the Santa Paula Society of the Arts Christmas Boutique. The Santa work by artist Virginia Gunderson cleverly has Old St. Nick gazing across the street at the Depot (on the corner of 10th and Santa Barbara Streets), home of the SPSA. Inside is where all sorts of unique goodies created by members of the nonprofit art society can be had for reasonable prices.Artist Louise Saviers was in charge of the Boutique – open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. – over the weekend and noted that the Boutique offers “a lot of Christmas cards and small paintings,” by area artists. Note cards, folk art, photos, computer graphic art, railroad art, holiday ornaments, miniature boxes, painted light switch covers, prints, pressed flower cards, postcards and even decorated tin pails are available. And the works are all by noted area artists including Barbara Curtis, Chris Lemon, Sally Miller, Jerry Zwers, Lynda Gruber, Judy Klement, and Dorine Lunceford, whose creations are perfect Christmas gifts and imaginative one-of-a-kind stocking stuffers.Saviers’ works include her multi-media creations using fabric, cloth, watercolor and at times “some stickers,” for her one-of-a-kind three-dimensional art.
Gunderson noted that the Christmas Boutique contains “quite a few unique hand-crafted articles,” as well as the chance to take part in a Silent Auction for an artist’s kit. “The kit is the perfect gift for someone that is a beginner, or even the experienced oil painter who wants to explore new avenues,” said Gunderson. “It contains a wide range of media from watercolors to pastels.”Bids for the kit are placed in a box which will be opened on Sunday, Dec. 19, “just in time to wrap it up for that special friend or child you know that has an interest in art,” Gunderson noted. For more information about the Christmas Boutique – and don’t forget to see the larger paintings hanging in the adjacent Depot Gallery! - or about the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, call 525-1104.
