Gordon L. King Gordon L. King, our beloved Father, passed away unexpectedly on January 20, 2005. He was a long time resident of Santa Paula and a kind and gracious neighbor.Gordon was born to William Floyd and Mary Agnes King on September 2, 1925 in Marlow, Oklahoma. He was educated, received his teaching credentials and began his teaching career in Kansas.Gordon and his family moved to Santa Paula in 1955, where he began teaching in the Santa Paula Elementary School District. He later taught at Ventura High School and Buena High School, where he retired in 1984. His teaching career spanned over three decades.Gordon is survived by his son Randy (wife Genette) King, and grandchildren, David (wife Natalie) King, Natalie (husband Greg) Dover, Jenny (husband Matt) Pack, Jon King and Lisa King; son Roy (wife Lynn) King, and grandchildren Jennifer King and Karen King; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Dorothy McQueen, and his loving wife Esther.A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5 at Skillin-Carroll Chapel, 538 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, 525-3391.Thomas Griffith-MastinThomas Griffith-Mastin, 89, of Turlock, passed away January 27, 2005 at Emanuel Medical Center.Mr. Griffith-Mastin was born in Bakersfield, and grew up in Canoga Park. He graduated in 1933 with a bachelor’s degree from UCLA, and received his master’s degree from University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. He lived in Akron from 1945 to 1978, then moved to Santa Paula. He settled in Turlock in 2000.Mr. Griffith-Mastin was a chemist for Goodyear Tire Company. He was a member of the Santa Paula First United Methodist Church, the Boy Scouts of America, Masonic Lodge, Appalachian Trail Conference, Nature Conservancy, and was a Hospice volunteer in Santa Paula. He enjoyed hiking and making jams and jellies for church bazaars.He is survived by his son, Thomas N. Mastin of Turlock; daughter, Janice Mastin-Kamp of Madina, Ohio; brother, Normand Morgan of Playa del Rey, California; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife Jean Mastin and wife Evaleen Mastin.A memorial service was scheduled for Tuesday, February 1 at the First United Methodist Church of Santa Paula. Burial is at Santa Paula Cemetery.Arrangements are under the direction of Allen Mortuary, Turlock, (209) 634-5829.
Chris Villa SigalaChris Villa Sigala, 88, of Santa Paula, passed away Friday, January 28, 2005 at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura after a brief illness. Chris was born in Santa Paula on December 25, 1916. He was a well-known landscape gardener for over 50 years throughout Ventura County.Chris served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe, where he was stationed in Germany for quite some time. He became an amateur boxer, where he put together boxing matches to entertain the troops.In the ‘50s, Chris led some of the largest Youth for Christ rallies in Ventura County and in the San Fernando Valley. Chris enjoyed ministering to the youth in these rallies, which literally drew hundreds of people of all ethnicities. He never missed an opportunity to share his faith and his love of God with whomever would lend an ear.Chris loved to watch boxing and football. His favorite team was the Raiders. One of his pleasures was watching his grandsons play baseball. In his earlier years, he enjoyed teaching youth boxing for the Santa Paula Recreation Department. By 1966, Chris had already donated his free time for 22 years to the activity.Chris was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Cobos Sigala; his parents, Ascensio and Mercedes Sigala; brother Frank Justo Sigala; and sister Sara Sigala Skinner.Chris is survived by his children, daughter Anita (husband Ben) Osuna and son Frank Manuel (wife Elva) Sigala; grandchildren, Terri (husband Mike) Osuna-Barnum, Carla Osuna-Ramirez, Frank (wife Cynthia) Sigala, Jr., Brenda Sigala Cervantes, and Christopher John (wife Sylva) Sigala; great-grandchildren, Kimberly Barnum, Micael Barnum, Jr., Jonathan Ramirez, Chris Sigala, Sara Sigala, Darlene Sigala, Christina Sigala, Frank (wife Veronica) Sigala, III, and Stevi Nicole Cervantes; and one great-great-grandchild, Andryna Sigala. Additional survivors include his brother, Al Sigala of Santa Paula; and sisters, Ruth Ramirez of Oxnard and Rose Lopez of Flagstaff, Arizona.Visitation was scheduled on Tuesday, February 1 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 2 at 10 a.m. at Valley Community Foursquare Church, 611 E. Main St., Santa Paula, with Pastor David McKeever officiating. Burial will follow at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, 525-3391.
