The only child of Robert (the Artist) and Myrtle Ireland (Class of 1917) Clunie, Kent graduated from SPUHS in 1948, where he made quite a name for himself in the field of tennis. Following graduation, he received his AA at Yuba Junior College in Marysville, CA, where he ranked No. 2 athlete of the year, and in 1950 he ranked No. 4 United States tennis singles champion.Kent spent two years with the U.S. Navy, where he was a member of the San Diego Naval Training Center and Treasure Island championship tennis teams in 1950 and 1951. Then he went on to San Jose State University, where he received his BA in sociology. He received his MCP at UC Berkeley in 1960, and his MA at San Jose State in 1965. He did graduate work at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in 1969 and 1970.In 1960 Kent was the assistant city planner for the City of Fremont, CA, and the assistant urban planner for Santa Clara County in San Jose from 1961 to 1963.He was an instructor of sociology at Yuba College in Marysville from 1965-66, and an instructor of social science at Oakmont High School in Roseville, CA from 1966-1969. Kent received a graduate fellowship at Brigham Young from 1969-1970. In 1970 he was a professor of sociology at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA, and in 1972 he received a Carnegie Foundation grant to Idaho State University and was an interim executive on the Council of Governments of Southeastern Idaho.
From 1973 to 1976 Kent was on the advisory board of the Fairoaks Mental Health Services in Santa Clara County. From 1978-79 he was developing planning studies for the Santa Clara County Planning Department, and was planning consultant for Douglas County, Nevada. He then went to De Anza College in Cupertino as a professor of sociology, and served on the executive board at De Anza.Kent belongs to the American Institute of Planners, the National Council of Family Relations, the International Platform Association, the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Science, the California Commission College Tennis Coaches Association, and the San Jose State University Alumni Association.Kent married Nadine Rudo, and has a daughter Jill. In retirement, Kent and Nadine are living in Arizona and enjoy traveling, spectator sports, art and reading. Kent still plays in tournament tennis. Occasionally they can be seen in Santa Paula visiting his cousin, June Mosher Maland, Class of 1939.
