By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe 4th of July falls on Monday, and many can take advantage of the holiday by staying close to home as there will be plenty to do from morning to night on Independence Day at two special events sponsored by the city. The 4th of July Pancake Breakfast will be held at the historic Depot, now festooned with banners proclaiming support for Santa Paula’s “favorite son” candidate for president, Sen. Vinick. Of course, Sen. Vinick is a fictional character played by Alan Alda on NBC’s “The West Wing,” but the City Council decided to adopt him for a burst of patriotism and publicity.Although Sen. Vinick - or Alan Alda for that matter - won’t make the Pancake Breakfast, there will be patriotic music. The patriotic program - “Even if it’s just me reading the Declaration of Independence,” chuckled City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz - will be held at 10:30 a.m.Tickets for the 9 to 11 a.m. Pancake Breakfast are $4 if you buy them before July 4th, and $5 for walkups the day of the event. Tickets are available at the Santa Paula Times (944 E. Main St.) and City Hall (970 E. Ventura St.).
Ron Merson of the Optimist Club and community volunteers will prepare the breakfast, which last year drew close to 300 people, a turnout that caused some scrambling as only about 20 tickets had been sold in advance. On the menu for the breakfast will be pancakes, sausage and orange juice. The city is also again sponsoring a 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at Harding Park on East Harvard Boulevard. Fireworks will start at dark and fill the sky above the city with a fabulous show to recreate the bombs bursting in air that occurred during America’s battle for independence declared in 1776. The 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at Harding Park is free to the public. Many others throughout the city will stay home to watch the show, as the fireworks are visible to many areas where the barbecue is fired up for dinner followed by the colorful sky display.Do yourself and others a favor this Independence Day season: do not use fireworks illegally in Santa Paula, as they are dangerous and can cause injury, death or fires. The Santa Paula Fire and Police Departments have partnered for a Fireworks Task Force now in effect that will be patrolling neighborhoods in marked and unmarked vehicles, cracking down on the use of fireworks by residents.Fire danger is high due to the winter rains and recent dry weather that have created abundant brush. In addition, fireworks are dangerous and can explode unexpectedly. There are no legal fireworks in Santa Paula. Being caught discharging fireworks can bring a stiff fine and jail time, so enjoy the 4th of July holiday in a safe and sane manner.
