By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesAlmost 60 new teachers starting in various Santa Paula school districts were welcomed with the annual Rotary New Teachers Barbecue held Sept. 19 at the ranch of Barbara and Roy Wilson Jr.Teachers from Santa Paula Union High, Santa Paula Elementary and Briggs school districts as well as St. Sebastian School joined administrators, principals and SPESD Trustees Michelle Kolbeck, Ofelia de la Torre, SPUHS Trustee Catherine Sepulveda and Briggs Trustee Zahid Shah at the event.New Teachers Barbecue Chairperson and Rotary Past President Maria Bombara noted that some teachers enjoyed a brief tour of the city before the gathering to “See all our murals and some of the other highlights of Santa Paula and learn some of the city’s history.”The annual event is a “Very unique program that our Rotary District really commends and Assistant to the District Governor Tony Huff” attended to experience the teachers’ welcome himself. The Rotary BBQ Team provided the dinner and each table was decorated with avocados provided by grower and Rotarian Paul Romero. Each teacher and administrator received a gift bag stuffed with goodies including city and bike trail maps from Ventura County Transportation Commission Executive Director Ginger Gherardi as well as clips, rulers, magnets highlighters, pens and other classroom supplies from Rotary and Santa Clara Valley Bank.
“We also put in information about Rotary” to acquaint the teachers’ with the goals and ideals of their hosts for the evening.Bombara said that the goal of the annual barbecue was again met: “It gives the teachers an overview of the very friendly community nature of our city and let’s them know that we recognize their dedication to our youth. Also the importance of Rotarian dedication to youth knowing that we have to build the community service and education presence in our city.”In turn the superintendents and administrators “All get to boast a little bit about their schools and gives them a chance to talk about all they accomplished the previous school year and plans for the future.”Teachers were also able to enjoy a setting outside their schools and portions of the city they might never experience, the “Absolute beauty we have to offer” Bombara said. “They get to see a little bit of Santa Paula, not just drive on and off campus think of the city as just a place where they teach. This way they get to know the town, members of the community and how much their efforts are appreciated, that the importance of their job is recognized.”Bombara said that the positives of the teachers’ welcome run both ways: “This is one of our club’s favorite events; we get to celebrate the community with it and show it off. We get to brag a little bit too.”For more information about the club and see photographs of the Teachers Welcome BBQ, visit the Web site, www.santapaularotary.org
