By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula man detained in the investigation of the Oct. 29 shootout near Mill Park has been arrested for suspicion of possession of methamphetamine for sale, according to a SPPD official. Also arrested was a second man, a suspect in the Ventura College stabbing of a Fillmore man in the school library who was also a suspect in the Mill Park area shootout.Acting Chief Mark Hanson said that Jesus Sebastian, 20, was arrested Nov. 4 after a warrant search of his vehicle turned up the drugs packaged for sale. The vehicle was seized the day of the shooting near Mill Park. No one was injured in what witnesses said was a shootout between suspects at a residence located at 725 N. Ojai Road and a passing vehicle. The shootout led to motorists being detoured around Ojai Road/Highway 150 in the vicinity of the 700 block of North Ojai Road and Mill Park for several hours.“We asked the day of the shooting for permission to search the vehicle and Sebastian said no,” so the vehicle was seized and a search warrant obtained, noted Chief Hanson. The search warrant was served Tuesday afternoon and investigators discovered “Methamphetamine packaged for sale...based on that a pick up order (arrest warrant) was issued for his arrest for possession for sales since Sebastian claimed ownership of the car,” a 1996 white Honda.Chief Hanson noted that three search warrants had been issued by Ventura Police related to the Nov. 3 Ventura College stabbing, including one at the North Ojai Road residence.
Ventura Police were looking for 27-year-old Jose Sebastian, who had been arrested by the SPPD after the Oct. 29 shootout for an outstanding misdemeanor driving under the influence warrant and violation of probation.Sebastian was at the residence and arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in the attack on Gabriel Vargas, 19 of Fillmore. Vargas received serious injuries after he was stabbed multiple times in a VC library restroom.Samuel Saldana, 19 and 18-year-old Anthony Navarez, both of Santa Paula, were arrested the same day of the stabbing. Saldana was arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and Navarez on charges of suspicion of possessing a firearm on a college campus and resisting arrest. When Ventura Police served the warrant for Jose Sebastian, Jesus Sebastian “was there, was searched and found to have methamphetamine in his pocket. He was arrested by Ventura Police on that charge plus our charge of methamphetamine for sale,” said Chief Hanson.SPPD Sgt. Carlos Juarez said that the amount of methamphetamine found in Sebastian’s vehicle was “more than for personal use and it was ready for easy distribution” through sales.Methamphetamine is sometimes referred to as “crystal meth...it’s almost like bigger chunks of salt” although it can be a powder, noted Sgt. Juarez.
