The Reverend Carolyn Price was installed March 19 as the 29th minister of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula in a celebration service that included the participation of congregation members and visiting Unitarian Universalist ministers. Rev. Price had been serving since August 2004 as the church’s consulting minister. With the theme “To Dwell Together…”, the service began with a traditional processional of more than 20 ministers. Member and 2004 Board President Suzi Skutley lit the chalice, and then current Board President Jerry Gray welcomed congregants and guests. Visiting ministers from across the Pacific Southwest District of the Unitarian Universalist Association offered readings and prayers.Special music for the celebration was provided by the Santa Paula Universalist Unitarian Church Choir, Music Director Mariana Franco-Sommer playing organ, piano and flute, and 2005 Board President John Robles performing a harp solo, “Under This Roof.”Board President Jerry Gray led the congregation in the Act of Installation, calling Rev. Price “to work among us, preach the truth in freedom, educate and counsel, and lead us in the spirit of love and compassion. We call you to minister to us in times of strength and struggle, that you lead us in a mutual quest for lives of wholeness, service, spiritual growth and kindness.”The call was accepted by Rev. Price “…with my whole heart and mind, with the infinite love of the spirit and the eternal bonds of peace.”Gray then called the congregation to shared ministry. “We also recognize our responsibility in your welfare and spiritual development. We will minister to you, as we would have you minister to us....”
A reception catered by Pamela’s was held in the Parish Hall following the Installation.Rev. Carolyn Price holds a Master’s of Divinity degree from the Claremont School of Theology, with coursework completed at UU schools Starr-King and Meadville Lombard. She holds Preliminary Fellowship as a Parish Minister with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and is certified in the Renaissance program for religious educators. She holds a California state teaching credential (English, Secondary) and a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English Literature. Prior to training for the ministry, Rev. Price was a long time lay leader in her home congregation (Santa Barbara) and in the Pacific Southwest District, where she continues to serve as consultant in the areas of congregational planning and redevelopment.The Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula is a registered Ventura County Landmark and a point of interest to those visiting Santa Paula. The church is located at 740 E. Main St., 525-4647. Sunday services are held at 10:30 a.m. Unitarian Universalism is known for its pluralistic approach to religion, where, as one of our slogans notes, “Different people, with different beliefs worship as one community of faith.” The church is also the setting for the popular Santa Paula Concert Series, now in its third season. The second concert of this season featuring The Legacy Trio, violin, cello and piano, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 1.
