She was raised in Camden, New Jersey. I remember her recounting how, as a young girl, she witnessed the Hindenburg disaster. In 1944, Joan graduated from Gloucester Catholic High School. In 1946, she married Dan Murray, who took his young bride to South Dakota, where they started their family. In 1966, via Denver, Santa Maria, St. Louis and Santa Barbara, they settled in Santa Paula, where Joan was a homemaker extraordinaire. She followed her father’s advice by “putting family affairs first.” She was a gifted seamstress, an avid gardener, and she enjoyed her dance club. But above all, she took care of her family. She was involved in the local schools and took on many volunteer assignments, which, as her children grew, evolved into her involvement in the political arena. Most notably, in 1974 Joan took on the task of precinct chairman for the Ventura County Republican Central Committee, where she spent the next six years reorganizing local precincts and helping to restore faith in the Republican Party. In 1981, she was named “California’s Outstanding Citizen Politician” and was presented with the prestigious “Walter” award. She continued on as finance chairman, and in 1984 moved to Sacramento to continue working in the political field. She returned to Santa Paula, earned her real estate license, and was employed by Cal West Real Estate until retiring in 1988. In 2001, she moved to Northern California to be near her son James, where she continued to enjoy her bridge games and knitting. She spent the past few years in a nursing home in the San Francisco area. She will be missed for her great sense of humor, her devotion to her grandchildren, her inimitable style, and, by God, let’s hope there’s at least one house in Heaven that she likes.
