Lila attended Life Way Baptist Church in Santa Paula. She enjoyed all the people there, and loved every service she attended.Lila is survived by her husband, Vernon Tubbs of Santa Paula; son Ed and wife Debbie of Cambridge, Ohio; daughter Jo Ellen Smelcer of Santa Margarita; son Bob and wife Kathy of Santa Paula; son Paul and wife Sharon of Santa Paula; grandchildren, Darren, Lisa, Travis, Mike, Heather, Jared, Lindsey, Kristy, Candace, James, Calvin, Nianna, Patrick and Brenna; six great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy and husband Charles “Bozo” Chaney of Santa Paula; brother Tommie Ray and wife Millie Guthrie of Sweethome, Oregon; sister Elizabeth Ann Guthrie of Porterville; sister Regina Guthrie of Clovis; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Both her parents preceded Lila in death.Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 27 at 10 a.m. at the Santa Paula Cemetery. She was born on March 26, 1927 in Santa Paula. She attended and was very much involved in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Paula.She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Belle Hernandez, and sisters Hope and Martina.Carmen will be greatly missed by her husband, Paul C. Tovias of Santa Paula. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Vivian David and Larry Tovias of Lompoc; brother Arthur C. Patrick Hewitt Lang (1942-2008)
Patrick Hewitt Lang died March 3, 2008 at his home in Eugene, Oregon. He was born in Van Nuys, CA on September 30, 1942 to Jack and Genevieve Lang.Patrick “Rick” Lang attended Mupu Elementary School, then Santa Paula Union High School, graduating in 1960. He played football all four years. He was a member of F.F.A. and 4-H, and was a Ventura Co 4-H All Star.Rick played football for two years at Ventura College and received an AA degree. At UCSB he played football and received a B.A. degree in Political Science in 1964. He played summer league ball with the Dallas Cowboys in Thousand Oaks. He was offered a contract with The Green Bay Packers; however he chose to attend Willamette University’s School of Law, where he received a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1967.Rick attended the FBI Academy, where he graduated and served the Bureau for 26 years. His law enforcement career included international assignments in Panama, Mexico, Haiti, South Africa, Somalia and Palestine.Rick later served as the director of the U.S. Department of Justice International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Programs. He was the Latin America director for the Anti-Piracy Program for the Motion Picture Association. Rick headed the Brand Integrity Program for Canadian and Latin American Regions for Phillip Morris International.Rick leaves his wife Holly of Eugene, OR; son Robert “Nick” Lang of Samoa, CA; daughters Marcie Lang of Alexandria, VA, and Sophie Lang of Eugene, OR. Internment to be at Smith River Cemetery, Smith River, CA.Lila May Tubbs1935-2008Lila May Tubbs, of Santa Paula, went to be with our Lord and Savior on March 20, 2008 at the age of 72, after she lost a battle with Parkinson’s disease. Lila was born on August 12, 1935 in Hugo, Oklahoma to her parents, Willie Tom and Alene Guthrie.Lila was married on January 15, 1954 to Vernon A. Tubbs, and had been married for 54 years. She was a graduate of Santa Paula High School, a member of the Class of 1953.Lila called Santa Paula home for over 60 years. She enjoyed many different jobs while living here; they ranged from the telephone company to Olga products in fashion development to accounting for Paramount Bootery in the old Oxnard Esplanade mall.Lila enjoyed her monthly Bunko group that she played with for years. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting, and the occasional bingo game. She loved spending time with her family, and especially all of her grandkids.
