Lucero Garcia Lucero Garcia, age 12, of Santa Paula, passed away August 29, 2008 at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. Lucero was born February 8, 1996 in Ventura to Guadalupe and Javier Garcia. She was a lifelong resident of Santa Paula.Lucero was diagnosed with cancer (osteosarcoma) on September 29, 2006 at the age of 10. She was treated at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles and Ventura County Medical Center.Lucero was smart, energetic, fun, loving, creative, a humble fighter, sassy, and a diva. She showed us strength and courage never to give up and to move forward in life.She is preceded in death by her father, Javier Garcia, who passed away March 29, 2005. She is survived by her mother, Guadalupe Garcia; brothers, Robert Velasquez and Michael Garcia; sister, Paola Garcia; and niece Alondra.The Garcia family would like to express their gratitude to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, Dr. David M. For further information, please call (805) 208-6843.Joe C. ToviasJoe C. Tovias passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 29, 2008, surrounded by his family. Joe was born in Long Beach, California on December 19, 1929 to Maria de Jesus and Cirilo Tovias.At a very young age Joe and his family relocated to Fillmore, where he spent his childhood days. Joe had fond memories of playing in Kenny Grove and La Campana.It was when Joe was in his teenage years that the family moved to Santa Paula. He graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1948.After graduation Joe married his high school sweetheart, Theresa Ramirez. Joe and Theresa celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this past January. The couple resided in Santa Paula and raised three children there.Joe’s 50-year career as a bricklayer started with schooling in Los Angeles. He was a life member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union, Local #4. His work can be seen throughout the county to this day.Joe was an avid guitar player and enjoyed playing music with his brothers-in-law, George Garnica and Fred Romero, at family gatherings. He continued to play the guitar to his final days.Joe also enjoyed an occasional visit to the Derby Club, gardening, and politics. He was an avid reader and could discuss any historical, political or current event. He loved debating the ins and outs of any election with anyone willing to take him on.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and sister Eleanor Vargas and brothers Ignacio and Bart Tovias.He leaves behind his wife Theresa; children, sons Bob and wife Sandi and Jim and wife Martha, and daughter Diana and husband Rodney Mendoza; and grandchildren, Rockie Ryno, Mark Tovias, Chris and Ann Dyer, Kelly and Josh Walker, Joey and Bridget Tovias, Lori Tovias, Robbie Tovias, Ryan and Gina Mendoza, and Justin Mendoza. His great-grandchildren are Jake and Kashara Ryno, Vanessa Tovias, Ruby Walker and Ciara Mendoza. He is also survived by his brother Paul Tovias and sister Benita Garcia.Theresa and family would like to give thanks for the numerous phone calls and assistance from friends and family. The family would also like to thank Dr. Jeff Tubbs, Dr. Sparkuhl, Dr. Swartout, their staff, and all the caregivers at Hospice Odyssey.Visitation will be held Sunday, September 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary in Santa Paula. The rosary will be recited that evening at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Paula. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on Monday, September 8. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, 525-3391.John Oscar AllisonJohn Oscar Allison, long time resident of Santa Paula for over 60 years, passed away in Ormand Beach, Florida on August 28, 2008. Weeks earlier John had celebrated being 90 years old. John and his wife Fern had moved to Florida about five years ago, to be near her family.John and his first wife, Irene, moved to Santa Paula in 1941 from Oklahoma. They worked at the Limoneira Ranch.John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon returning, he ran a little one-pump gas station on Main Street, and then had a grocery and one-pump station in Casitas Springs. He then worked at “The Mill” for SP Milling before going to work at Safeway on 8th Street until it burned down in the early 60s. He then opened a grocery in El Rio for a few years.All that time he sold advertising specialties insurance and Knapp Shoes from his old 1948 Dodge with the twirling sign on top. Anyone still around remember that sight?His wife Irene died in 1964, and he married Janice Thiem of Ojai in 1969. They divorced in 1971. He married Fern Starr in 1972.John worked for the Santa Paula Post Office for 19 years. He retired and lived in Santa Paula until moving to Florida with his wife Fern in 2003.John is survived by his wife, Fern; his twin sisters Juanita Adams of Tishomingo, Oklahoma and Geneva Goodman of Camarillo, CA; and his son Roger Allison and grandson Joel Alison of Santa Paula. He is also survived by his granddaughter Jamie Lee and two great-grandchildren of Medford, Oregon.Graveside services will be at Santa Paula Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 6. VFW Color Guard arranged by Camino Del Sol.
