Sanford F. Cook Sanford F. Cook, of Solvang, California, went home to be with his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, November 16, 2009 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital after a long and courageous fight against Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma December 23, 1934 to Harmon and Edith Cook.Sanford excelled at whatever he kept his mind to. He graduated from Santa Paula High School and continued his education in the Army. He completed his tour in Germany, where in the motor pool he developed a life long love for anything auto-related and mechanical.During his final tour he advanced to tank operator. His competitive nature got him in a little trouble one time for racing other tanks to prove his was the fastest.He went on pursuing his love of mechanical things, starting out with the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company involved in service, sales, and finally management. His next venture involved purchasing both Texaco gas stations located on Harvard Boulevard. These experiences provided the catalyst for his venture into the tire business. Cook Tire Inc. has been located in Santa Paula, Bakersfield, Buellton and Camarillo, CA. He was actively involved in his business with his family throughout his lifetime.Sanford was a man of integrity, being actively involved in leadership supporting the ministry of local community churches. He was guided by his strong faith, knowing that a personal relationship with Christ was most important.His personal commitment to the local community was further evidenced as he served as a volunteer on the Santa Paula Fire Department, serving as assistant chief. He was always ready to help any who he saw in need.A loving father, husband and grandfather, Sanford is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Cook; daughter Sherri Cassell; son Michael Cook Sr.; son-in-law Jeff Cassell; daughter-in-law Carlyna Cook; grandson Michael Cook Jr.; granddaughters Nikki Cassell and Jenna Cook; sisters Helen Gentry and Linda Jacobs; sister-in-law Big Aunt Margie Hodges from Bakersfield; as well as many nieces and nephews. Sanford is now reunited with his mother Edith and father Harmon Cook, sister Margaret Suggs, brother Billy Cook, brothers-in-law Don Jacobs and John Gentry, and nephew Randy Cook.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 23 at Skillin Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula Street. A graveside service will follow immediately at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery.Velia Trujillo GarciaVelia Trujillo Garcia, 84, our loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt passed away peacefully November 6, 2009 in Cottonwood, AZ, the place of her birth. Velia was born on July 25, 1925.Velia enjoyed life surrounded by loving family and caring friends. Her employment included Hormel Meats, W. T. Grant Stores, S.P.E.S.D. Migrant Education Program, and the 3-M Company. After retirement, she was active as a cabinet member of American Legion Post 25 in Cottonwood, AZ.Velia was preceded in death by her husband Henry Diaz Garcia, parents Pascual and Guadalupe Trujillo, brother Manuel Trujillo, sister Mary Louise Anderson, and son Henry Edward Garcia. She is survived by her sons William (Melinda) Garcia of Los Banos, CA and Lawrence Garcia of Santa Paula, CA; brother Edward Trujillo (Hortencia) of El Paso, TX; sisters Elvira Cardenas, Helen Ramirez and Alicia Gallego (Frank) of Cottonwood, AZ; granddaughters Donna, Casey and Courtney Garcia; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.Services were held in Cottonwood, AZ.
