Support our local youth

To the Editor:

The Santa Paula Boys and Girls Club needs your attention and support.

These tough economic times have affected many not-for-profit organizations as badly, in many instances, as they have Main Street business. In order to surmount these problems the Club has expanded its Board of Directors with some exceptional individuals, and left several staff positions unfilled.

The Club, in short, is tightening its belt and urgently needs the support of the community. Having survived – and in many years thrived – its 61-year history, the Club is essential to the social growth of the community’s youth.

Please call the Club at 525-7910 to offer your time, treasure or talent in order to make a difference for today’s kids.

Veterans honoring a veteran

To the Editor:

Recently I attended a funeral of 92-year-old Russell Frazee, a veteran of WWII who had spent 3 ½ years as a prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp. Boy, did he have a lot of stories to tell!

At the graveside service was the presentation of “the Colors” by a group of veterans from Mercer-Prieto VFW Post 2043 and Korean War Veterans Chapter #56. They do such a beautiful presentation in honor of our veterans! I and, I know, the family of Russell Frazee are very, very grateful for the service that these veterans perform.

They take pride in the presentation of the flag of our Nation to the family, in memory of the veteran who has passed on. This gave me a sense of pride in Russell and also in our flag for what they both stand for.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Care for our city

To the Editor:

It is the new year already and I hope we see our new city manager as an observer and more appreciative of all the volunteers who help to add more funds to the city coffer. I hope he sees all the potholes on Harvard Blvd. I hope he sees the much tougher job the Police Department will have with the “many” extra felons that are now coming to our streets.

We the public should know who they are as well as the pedophile subjects. As a member of the SPPD Citizen’s Patrol, I see the officers already have a heavy load. Having been a member of the military in years past, I know what danger is and I don’t think we ought to have it here in our town. Or any town. And our kids and grandkids need to be safe without our worry.

If those of you who don’t read newspapers and just watch the soaps, our governor has proposed to have many, many thousands of felons released, and now they are arriving. Many of them will be back on our streets doing what they only know, crime.

The local citizens should be much more observant. The local police say that if you observe something unusual, even a prowler cruising, to call in and it will be checked out.

We of our CERT and P.D. Citizen’s Patrol committee are proud of Officer K-9 Sergeant Jimmie Fogata for the many, many hours of classes and the academy classes, and he never stops. Our CERT training teacher was Captain Steve Lazenby and the whole SPFD crew. Very well done.

And yes, our SP Police Chief, SPFD Chief and retired SPFD Chief, thanks much. And Bobby (SPPD ret.).

Softball fundraiser

To the Editor:

For over 100 years the Cardinal legacy of tradition and excellence has inspired the students, staff and community of Santa Paula. It is the mission of Santa Paula Union High School District to significantly raise student achievement and ensure all students pass the California High School Exit Exam, earn and diploma and complete the requirements to attend college through a rigorous curriculum and safe environment.

Additionally, at Santa Paula High School athletic goals are valued just as much as academic goals. As a teacher and coach, it is my mission to help students develop an identity beyond that of being an athlete. As a result, one must convey the message that it is essential to work equally hard as student and athlete. Laying this foundation will not only help students be successful in high school, but it will also prepare them to be prosperous young adults and contribute positively to our society.

At Santa Paula High School, we are currently in a transition phase with the softball program. As both a first year teacher and coach, the adaptation to the daily routine that both roles require has been very challenging. A key goal we are striving towards it taking a step forward from what we have accomplished the past few years. It is clear that the road will be bumpy and issues will arise. Nonetheless, we have been working very hard to generate revenue to cover some of the expenditures that will arise throughout the season. Currently, we are finalizing plans for a few fundraisers to help pay for our expenses. However, we are still without essential items such as uniforms, equipment, bats and balls.

Even though our circumstances are not the best, the girls continue to have a positive outlook for the softball season. As we prepare for an enjoyable 2010 softball season at Santa Paula High School we are looking for any and every sort of assistance we can receive. Donations are tax deductible. We would greatly appreciate if you are able to assists us with that process.

On behalf of the Santa Paula High School softball program, thank you in advance.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
