A 99 Cent Store did not open at the Collection outlet shopping mall, there is no such thing as Death Metal Mariachi and Ventura County Fairgrounds, AKA Seaside Park, definitely was not sold.
The latter was the headline on the front page of April 1 edition of the Ventura Reporter and inside the faux story notes that famed commercial developer Rick Caruso and his cronies were the buyers. Ventura County Fairgrounds was reported to have been sold for $58 million.
The joke seems to have backfired as at least one Ventura County Fair Director already reported being bombarded with phone calls regarding the sale.
The April Fool’s journalistic joke is based on the reality of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s early move last year to take an inventory of public property such as fairgrounds that could be sold to help keep afloat the fiscally sinking ship of state.
A nice touch to the faux article is that on the opposite page is a advertisement of upcoming Ventura County Fairground attractions, which are not a joke.
