Cardinal Coach Teojua Sanchez is in his third year as head coach of the football program and he feels very confident about the teams’ prospects in the Tri-Valley League.

“I feel extremely confident moving back into the Tri-Valley League,” he said.  “Moving back into the Tri-Valley League was one of the goals of the program when I took over as head coach.”

The re-aligned league is made up of Santa Paula, Fillmore, Oak Park, Carpinteria and Nordhoff.  Sanchez says that he believes every team has a legitimate opportunity to win the league title.  “Teams are evenly matched throughout the league and there is not a clear cut favorite,” he said.  “I am excited to renew the Nordhoff and Carpinteria rivalries as well competing against Oak Park.”

With Oaks Christian out the mix this year, Sanchez feels the race for the league title is wide open.  He said, “We need to stay healthy in order to compete for the league championship. We lack depth at certain positions but we feel comfortable with the state of our football program.”

The starting quarterback is Kameron Klien.  He is the returning starter and will be looking for his break out year. “We have two very good running backs in Esteban Magana and Armando Ramirez,” he added.  “Both have great vision and excellent hands. The defense looks to be the strength of the team; senior linebacker Joe Morales is a returning three-year starter. We are returning five defensive starters from last year.”

Most of last year’s varsity coaching staff is back this season they are: Myke Montoya, Mark Unzueta, Brian Blackshere, John Wadkowski, Greg Yzaguirre, Rose Espinosa and Scott Simmons.

One of the major contests this year is the 100th meeting of the Santa Paula and Fillmore football teams.  This is sure to be a major focus for both communities as the two teams vie for the old leather helmet and bragging rights.  Sanchez said, “We are very excited to be a part of the historic rivalry game between Santa Paula and Fillmore High Schools. The coaching staff understands the magnitude of this particular game and will work hard in our preparation for that historic game.”
