Santa Paula News
The 2011 Great California ShakeOut on October 20 at 10:20 a.m. is now less than three months away, and already more than 6.8 million Californians are registered to participate!
To learn more, register and participate in the ShakeOut for 2011 visit www.ShakeOut.org and click the “Register for 2011 ShakeOut” button. As a registered participant, you will:
* Be counted in the largest earthquake drill ever!
* Be included (at your option) on lists of who is participating in your area
* Be an example that motivates others to participate and get prepared
* Be updated with ShakeOut news and information about earthquakes and preparedness
* Be provided a customized 2011 ShakeOut Certificate of Participation to download after the drill (when you register, be sure to list your name and/or organization as it should appear on the certificate)
The Shakeout is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves when big earthquakes happen, and to get prepared for a quick recovery. Even if you have participated in the past you are encouraged to participate again. Many past participants are also practicing additional aspects of their emergency plans this year.
The ShakeOut is Spreading
The California Shakeout began in 2008 in Southern California, grew statewide in 2009, and was joined by ShakeOut Drills in Nevada and Guam in 2010. This October 20th, California will be joined again by Nevada and Guam, and also by Idaho, British Columbia, and Oregon! Learn more at www.ShakeOut.org/history
Basic Instructions for your Drill
Here is how to have a basic Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill, and suggestions for what to do after:
* At 10:20, practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On for at least 60 seconds (In Santa Paula listen to the drill broadcast on AM 1610):
• DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!)
• Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table (or against a wall with your arms covering your head/neck), and
• HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops (in this case, 60 seconds)
* After the drill talk with anyone around you about what might happen in a real earthquake, what you learned by practicing, and how you can reduce the risk of injury (at home, work, or school) by securing your space.
* Share photos, stories, or videos, and tweet your drill (use #shakeout).
Get your family, co-workers and friends to participate. Visit www.ShakeOut.org or call 805-933-4297 for more information.
