Jan Corwin Lindsay
Jan Corwin Lindsay, 67, of Santa Paula, California, died at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California on August 13, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Jan was born September 18, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois to Katharine Lindsay and the late Dr. Donald G. Lindsay. He received his high school diploma from Villanova Preparatory School in 1964, and graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 1971, majoring in economics with an emphasis in accounting. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1967 - 1969. Jan married Pamela Roberts in 1968.
After college, Jan worked in Los Angeles with international accounting firms and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1973. In 1975, he moved back to Ventura where he started his own accounting firm, Lindsay and Company, CPA.
In 2011, he decided to semi-retire to focus more time on GOCARE, Inc. and its mission in Nicaragua. Shortly after first visiting this poverty-stricken country in 2001 he co-founded the non-profit GOCARE, Inc. Jan felt strongly that education is the best way to help lift a community out of poverty and empower its citizens. Over the past 13 years, he has helped thousands of students graduate from GOCARE’s educational programs.
Jan was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Ventura East and was the Centennial District Governor (2004-2005) for Rotary District 5240. He founded the International Projects Conference in Ensenada, MX in 1998, with a vision of educating Rotarians on the economics of poverty and the development of sustainable solutions to eliminating poverty. This concept grew into Rotary District 5240’s Poverty Conference in 2001. Later, in collaboration with California State University, Channel Islands and the University of California Santa Barbara, the Symposium to Eliminate Poverty Sustainably (STEPS) was born. Jan was the CFO for the Los Angeles 2008 Rotary International Convention and was a Rotary Foundation Cadre team member. In 2008, Jan was honored with Rotary International’s highest honor, the Service Above Self Award.
Jan never took any responsibility lightly, nor did he ever do anything half-heartedly. His family and friends received the same dedicated focus as his community service and professional life. When his grandchildren were twelve, he took them on a personal tour of Washington D.C., not simply as tourists, but to educate them about the foundations of our government and its underlying principles and ideals.
He never tired of learning about new countries and cultures. He was an avid traveler and had friends on every continent. He shared the love of travel and adventure with his family and friends, from humble camping trips to exotic African safaris. He had a lifelong love of boats and fishing, that led to sailing adventures and cruise experiences with family and friends on rivers and oceans of the world.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald G. Lindsay, MD, brother, James Lindsay, MD, infant sister Becky and infant brother Robert.
Jan is survived by Pamela Lindsay of Santa Paula, his wife of 46 years; his children, Michelle Mulchay and spouse, Mark of Camarillo; David Lindsay and spouse, Connie of Santa Clarita; his mother, Katharine Lindsay of Kauai; and his sister, Diane Lindsay and her spouse, Tali Tadmor of Los Angeles. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren; Shawn Mulchay, Scott Mulchay, Nicole Cekov Nellis and spouse, Sam, Ashley Cekov, Trevor Mulchay, Stephanie Cekov, Casey Mulchay, John Lindsay, Nathan Lindsay and William Lindsay.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at California State University Channel Islands in the Grand Salon at 11:00am. Donations can be made in Jan’s name to GOCARE, Inc. or a charity of your choice.
