A Santa Paula man who shot himself during a domestic dispute Thursday in Camarillo died the same day of an apparent domestic dispute in Camarillo Heights.

According to a Ventura County Sheriff’s Office release, on July 16 at about 1:03 p.m. a neighbor in the area of the 400 block of Alosta Drive “called 9-1-1 to report hearing a physical and verbal disturbance coming from inside a residence nearby. A short time later, the same neighbor reported hearing what they believed to be a gunshot.”

Camarillo deputies assigned to the unincorporated area arrived on scene and the unidentified 29-year-old Santa Paula resident was found inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head. He was treated on scene and then transported to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks with what was reported at the time as a serious injury.

He died later Thursday at 9:45 p.m.; an autopsy was scheduled Monday.

The man’s wife, 23, also of Santa Paula, was taken to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Medical Center in Camarillo to be treated for minor injuries.

Although children were apparently in the home at the time officials said they were not harmed and did not witness the incident. The relationship between the couple and children was unclear.

The Santa Paula married couple did not live at the Camarillo Height home, but the man may have been staying there for a time when the wife showed up and the dispute began. Officials noted that one the couple’s family members owned the house where the incident occurred.

According to a VCSO spokeswoman, “The Major Crimes Unit investigated the incident and determined the man’s death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a domestic argument.”
