Noted artist and instructor Judy Klement will be trading the pastels she has become so known for and returning to acrylic when she is featured Sunday at the Santa Paula Society of the Arts Demonstration Meeting.
The November 15 meeting will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Depot Gallery, the second level of the historic building located at the corner of 10th and Santa Barbara streets.
As always the general public is welcome to attend the meeting where they will have the chance to win fine art.
“Judy,” said SPSA President Virginia Gunderson, “is a multi-faceted artist,” working in various mediums and particularly admired for her portrait work.
Klement, who teaches for the Ventura Adult Continuing Education program — she also stages an annual show of her students’ work — as well as at her home studio, describes her art technique as Impressionistic Realism. Aside from portraits she also enjoys creating landscapes, seascapes, custom art, architecture, flowers, murals and other works in every medium from watercolor to pen-and-ink.
Her works are seen in private and corporate collections here and abroad and Klement’s art has been awarded many prizes.
Klement was even called upon several years ago by a group in Ireland that asked her to paint their portrait sitting in their favorite pub to include a friend that had passed away.
For portraits Klement takes candid studio photos in a relaxed setting while getting acquainted with her subjects. She can give her subjects a great “hair day”, change an outfit and do modifications.
Although often called upon and adept at creating paintings of departed relatives, Klement prefers that you honor your loved ones with a portrait while they’re still here!
“It is,” said Klement, “a most thoughtful and well received gift of love.”
She has exhibited at the Ventura County Museum of History & Art and Buenaventura Gallery, the Maritime Museum in Oxnard, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, California Oil Museum and Bank of America among others. Her “Statute at Battery Park” is in the permanent collection of the US Coast Guard and “Cooper’s Hawk” was shown in the New York National Art Club Exhibition.
Klement said she loves creating art using any subject that fascinates her, “An endless quest!”
The Santa Paula Society of the Arts Depot Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday noon to 4 p.m., other times by appointment. Be sure to visit the Depot Gift Shop where handmade crafts, paintings, sculpture, greeting cards, refrigerator magnets and other works of unique art made by society members are available for purchase at reasonable prices.
