Fourth Grade students at Glen City Elementary School Learned how to ride their bicycles safely in a Bike Rodeo program put on by the Santa Paula Police Department last week.

This was the fourth elementary school they’ve visited this school year. The children were taught about how to ride safely on the street, what to do at intersections and safety at railroad crossings. SPPD bicycle officers were there to teach the kids how to ride safely. Officers Hector Ramirez, Mike Hoppin, Dan Gosselin, Dan McCarthy and Eric Burnett put on the program.

Talking to the students beforehand, officers told the children to always wear a helmet and to keep it strapped on. They said that was the number one piece of safety equipment. They also checked to make sure they had working brakes. “You need to make sure your parents check to make sure you have working brakes,” Burnett said.

The children rode their bikes through a course, including a stop sign, riding next to cars on the street, a stoplight and a railroad crossing.

Additional bike safety programs are planned for January and February. Officer Burnett said they are in need of bike helmets to use at the schools. You can make a tax-deductible donation to the Santa Paula Police and Fire Foundation for purchase of the helmets. Send your check to P.O. Box 162, Santa Paula, 93061.
