Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crime detectives and Todd Road Jail personnel are investigating the Sunday afternoon death of an inmate, a Santa Paulan, housed at the facility just west of Santa Paula.

Although foul play is not suspected, an autopsy was not able to determine exactly how Jose Bautista died, and the matter is pending further investigation.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, on January 24 at approximately 11:25 a.m. Bautista, 44 of Santa Paula, “suffered a medical emergency at the Todd Road Jail facility.

“Deputies and jail medical staff responded immediately and rendered aid,” and Bautista was transported to St. John’s Hospital by ambulance.

He was pronounced dead a little more than an hour later by hospital staff.

Known locally as “Chuy” Bautista reportedly suffered from severe diabetes.

The cause of death is under investigation by the VCSO Major Crimes Bureau.

A VCSO spokesman said there was no indication of “violence or suspicious circumstances,” related to Bautista’s death.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau as a matter of procedure investigates all inmate deaths.
