Wendy Fowkes Sather

Wendy Fowkes Sather left her earthly home on Saturday, February 13th, 2016 (born July 16, 1946).  She grew up in Santa Paula, having attended McKevett Elementary/Middle School and Santa Paula Union High School, graduating in 1964.  Wendy’s fond childhood memories revolve around her family; parents, John and Helen Jean Fowkes, her siblings, Randall, Doug and Louise (Weezy) and their many swim parties and barbeques at their Say Road home with friends.  She taught years of swim lessons at their pool, rode horses, climbed avocado trees and biked around the neighborhood with her friends.

Wendy attended the University of California, Berkley, University of Lund (Sweden), and University of California, Santa Barbara, where she graduated with a B.A. in Sociology (1968). She married Lee Sather in 1968, earned her Graduate Teaching Certificate at University of California, Santa Barbara in 1969 and received her R.N. degree from Weber State University in 1978.

Wendy and Lee raised their 3 children, John, Kate and Brittanie in Ogden, Utah. The family’s adventures found them living in Norway for a year where Wendy worked in a Norwegian hospital, making lifelong friends and watching her kids become “Norwegian.”  After their kids flew the coop, Wendy and Lee enjoyed fly-fishing, retreating to their cabin in Idaho, attended sports events and travelled world-wide.  Later in life she welcomed her six beautiful grandchildren to the family.

Wendy spent 25 years at McKay Dee Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care unit, was a

Flight Manager of the hospital’s Neonatal Life Flight team, a clinical researcher for the Emergen Genetic Research Project and worked as a Clinical Trial Nurse. Wendy was a member of the Ogden (Chapter P) of P.E.O., past President and Secretary of the Family Counseling Services of Northern Utah and member of the Weber State Wildcat Club and Elim Lutheran Church.

Wendy had a multitude of best friends, abroad and throughout the U.S., with whom she has kept in contact. Her Facebook page describes her perfectly:  “like an adopted Mom to me”, “a privilege to know Wendy” and “a wonderful woman”.  If you know Wendy those descriptions fit.

A memorial service will be held on Friday May 27, 2016, at 2:00 pm at the Santa Paula Cemetery for those who wish to join us.
