Dr. Slater, a native of Fresno, has been a Clinical Associate Professor in Medicine at UCLA since 1978.Married to Frances, the couple has three children, Evan, Madeline and Dylan.He enjoys ocean activities - surfing, swimming, etc. - and other sports, including running and biking.The VCMRF is a non-profit organization authorized to solicit, receive and serve as custodian for gifts, donations, grants or bequests to the programs, services and equipment needs of county health providers to the uninsured, underserved and working poor.The David C. Fainer Award is "Our way of acknowledging the fine medical community," of which the VCMRF is a part, said Chandler. Most people in the Santa Clara River Valley know him as a founder of the non-profit Hospice, and now Dr. Evan D. Slater is being honored as Physician of the Year by the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation.
Named in honor of the late David C. Fainer, M.D. the 1999 VCMRF Awards are sponsored by GTE and Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, and will be presented on Nov. 19th at the Residence Inn during "The Night of Stars".Also being honored as Physician Emeritus is Art Simpson, M.D.; Nurse of the Year Kim Kandarian, RN; and Volunteer of the Year Herb Wilson.Educated at Amherst, Duke, Yale and the University of California, Dr. Slater has always "Exemplified the best of the competent, artful, caring physician," said Victoria Chandler of the VCMRF. "His dedication to excellence is relentless and raises the standards of all with whom he practices."Known as a "Doctor's Doctor", he practiced Oncology/Hematology in Santa Paula, offering "cutting edge treatment, compassion and hope to thousands burdened with cancer or similar grim conditions," added Chandler.After 21 years, Dr. Slater closed his Santa Paula practice in June and joined the Ventura County Medical Center full-time, where he has been the director of the Hematology/Oncology Clinic since 1978.Dr. Slater's medical articles and studies have been widely published.A founder of Hospice of Santa Clara Valley with his nurse, Kathy Zwers, RN, he has worked with the organization for over 20 years; the Hospice offers free physical, spiritual and emotional support to those with life-threatening illnesses and their families in the communities of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru, as well as an array of related services.
