In the wake of the recent closure of Santa Paula Memorial Hospital and its Emergency Room, residents in Santa Paula and Fillmore will soon have access to nearby urgent care at each city’s local CMH Center for Family Health.Ventura’s Community Memorial Hospital, in a joint cooperative effort with the emergency physicians most recently associated with Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, has announced the expansion of services to include urgent care at the existing Centers for Family Health locations on January 19th.“We’re pleased to have the resources and be in a position to assist these communities in a time of need,” said Ken Strople, interim executive director at Community Memorial. “With the closure of Santa Paula Hospital and its Emergency Room, there is obviously a very real shortfall in urgent medical services available in Santa Paula, Fillmore, and the other communities in the Santa Clara Valley. This will greatly help fill that need.”To do so, Community Memorial is adding new radiology and lab equipment to both Centers for Family Health facilities and increasing the hours at each. The Santa Paula center will undergo significant expansion to double the number of examining rooms and to house additional x-ray services.“We’ll be open 365 days a year until 10 p.m. in Santa Paula,” said Dr. Richard Reisman, medical director of the Centers for Family Health, “and if we see a greater demand, we will expand those hours, and the hours in Fillmore, in the future. Our aim is to meet the urgent healthcare needs of these communities.”The Santa Paula Med Care Urgent Care Center will be located in the CMH Center for Family Health building at 242 E. Harvard Blvd., Suite C, in Santa Paula. Hours at the Urgent Care Center will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and holidays.Dr. Logan Bundy, the former Emergency Room director at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, will oversee the Med Care Urgent Care Center. He will be joined by former Santa Paula ER colleagues Dr. Jeffrey Tubbs, Dr. Michelle Daucett, and Dr. Michael Tushla, as well as Dr. Victor Dominguez, who currently provides physician services at the Santa Paula Center for Family Health.
“I will continue to fulfill my mission of providing quality healthcare to the community of Santa Paula,” said Dr. Dominguez. “There is now an added need for urgent care services, and I am pleased that Community Memorial Hospital will be able to provide this type of care 365 days a year to all individuals in the community who need it.”The Fillmore Medical Plaza Urgent Care Center, located in the CMH Center for Family Health Building at 852 Ventura St. in Fillmore, will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its outstanding staff will include Dr. Raymond Menchaca and Dr. Michelle Daucett.Dr. Reisman noted that, “With both new Urgent Care Centers, I think it’s important that these are local physicians who already know these communities and have a history of being committed to meeting the needs of their residents.”Both Urgent Care Centers will be capable of treating most of the minor emergency needs that Santa Paula Memorial Hospital’s ER previously cared for, such as broken bones, cuts and lacerations, illnesses and fevers. However, no ambulances will bring patients into the two new Urgent Care Centers. If it is determined that hospital treatment is necessary, patients will be diagnosed, stabilized, and transported to CMH. In such instances, the patient will be admitted directly into the hospital, without going through the Emergency Room process upon arrival. Patients with life threatening emergencies including major trauma and cardiac problems should continue to call 911 and go to a full service emergency room.“Community Memorial is serving as a partner to help fill an important healthcare need,” said Strople. “It’s really local doctors doing this and we are pleased that we can provide the structure and expertise to bring it into fruition. The end result is that everyone is working together to overcome misfortune and develop services to address the needs of the citizens of Santa Paula and Fillmore.”
