Does anyone have some free time to write a few lines on a card or notepaper to one of Santa Paula’s “old timers”? I don’t think he would mind me calling him that.He gets the Santa Paula Times up in very cold country, loves to ice fish and keep up with all the news about his former hometown. For many years after work hours and on weekends he entertained people with his gifted harmonica playing and pleasant conversational jokes. Please find a bit of time to send this former “Native Son” just a few lines. He can no longer ice fish and do many of the things he loved to take part in week by week. I am hoping I can “reel in” a few fish stories from friends for him as he is now in a rest home. His name and address: Leo Zimprich, c/o Colony Court, 200-22nd Ave. N.E., Room 214, Waseca, MN 56093.Thanks from one of his “old time” friends.Helena R. KeefeSanta PaulaDon’t gripe - volunteer! To the Editor:Last night, Friday, February 4, I attended a middle school basketball game, Isbell and Sacred Heart, a very hard-fought, close game. After the “Star Spangled Banner,” by the way, beautifully, “with so much feeling,” sung by a member of the Isbell girls basketball team, the game went on.As I mentioned, a close game. As usual a few loud mouth parents in the audience for either team. This night it was bad; one group with the losing team was very rude, shouting at the referee on his calls and the way he was refereeing. He was good and did a good job. These parents should realize “it takes two referees.” The other referee didn’t show; “it takes two referees.”We must remember this young man is a volunteer there for the purpose of helping our youngsters, a volunteer - “no pay” - he just loves to help, and did not deserve the treatment he was getting.Maybe next season if you parents feel you can do better, “volunteer,” show us you really know basketball.John M. NunezSanta PaulaThat’s entertainment! To the Editor:You don’t have to go to New York, Las Vegas, or even L.A. for an evening of quality entertainment. “The Diary of Anne Frank” is currently playing on our own little Broadway, the Santa Paula Theater Center. Although most of us are familiar with the plight of Miss Frank and this horrific part of history, none of us would expect to find such a mesmerizing portrayal of this important event right here on our local stage. The high-spirited Miss Frank is brought to life by the exceptionally talented Alexandra Currie, supported by an outstanding group of seasoned performers. This captivating production covers the full range of emotions in an easy to watch performance. Although the circumstances are grim, the charming Frank family and their housemates engage in a variety of dialogue and antics that are sure to bring a smile to your lips and a tear to your eyes. This is entertainment at its finest and performed for you at a bargain price. Don’t miss it!Kay GlennSanta Paula

Tough vote
To the Editor:On Wednesday, County Supervisor Kathy Long, sitting as a LAFCO commissioner, had to cast a very tough vote. While a majority of commissioners voted in favor of Santa Paula’s application to increase its sphere of influence, Supervisor Long did not support the proposal that included Adams Canyon.I once heard Kathy Long say that virtually all of the decisions that come before the Board of Supervisors are very tough decisions. This was true of the decision that came before LAFCO on Wednesday. Many well-intentioned people disagree particularly on whether the Adams Canyon area can be developed for the benefit of current residents.Kathy Long has worked for years to assist Santa Paula, first as a district three field deputy and now as our elected representative. Kathy is on the board of our Heritage Valley Tourism bureau and is working to obtain grant funding to hire dedicated staff. She established a Jobs To Career Center in Santa Paula that offers job counseling, skills evaluation and resume-writing. She works tirelessly on projects that benefit Santa Paula and is very accessible and responsive to Santa Paula residents. We need to remember that Supervisor Long is at the forefront of the effort to force Los Angeles County and the Newhall Company to analyze downstream water resources impacts to Ventura County of the proposed Newhall Ranch community near Piru. Her public credibility on that issue demanded that she thoroughly examine any growth proposal within Ventura County. Although a sphere of influence vote pertains to jurisdiction over the land and does not approve construction, state law requires that LAFCO commissioners make some project-related inquiries in a sphere application.I supported the city’s sphere of influence application including the Adams Canyon properties. I believe the children of Santa Paula, our safety employees and current residents may benefit if we can find the kind of projects that have made Camarillo and East Ventura vibrant communities. But we must proceed carefully and watch the details.Supervisor Long’s conclusion that a compromise be made concerning the properties to be included in the sphere should be respected. Her proposal was based on diligent inquiry and analysis.I hope that everyone, whether they believe they won or lost on Wednesday, will join me in continuing to support Kathy Long for her hard work on the tough decisions that have to be made.Rita GrahamSanta PaulaGreat production! To the Editor:Santa Paula Theater Center’s production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” is wonderful. Leaving the special preview Thursday night I heard Bill Glenn say, “This is just like Broadway, except that there’s parking!” I agree.Molly KingSanta PaulaThanks for supportTo the Editor:On behalf of John M.
