Glenn V. Hobson Longtime Santa Paula resident Glenn V. Hobson, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at his home with his loving family at his side.Glenn was born on July 27, 1920 in Sentinel, Missouri to Ray and Veda Hobson. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theatre. He moved to Santa Paula after the war was over and made Santa Paula his home for 60 years.Glenn attended the Free Will Baptist Church in Santa Paula. He was an avid fisherman and loved his RV. The most important thing in Glenn’s life was his family, whom he loved dearly.Glenn’s family will miss him deeply, including his loving wife and companion of 65 years, Gladys. He is also survived by his daughter, Glenda Hobson of Santa Paula; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dan Johnson of Montrose, Colorado; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jeanne Hobson of Roseburg, Oregon; daughter, Janett Cole of Santa Paula; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Joel French of Sacramento, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Cindy Hobson of Maryville, Tennessee; son, Michael Hobson of Santa Paula and his companion Cheryl Baudizzon; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Juanita Hobson of Bolivar, Missouri; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Elmo Brooks of Oxnard; and sister, Emogene Agee of Halfway, Missouri; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Veda Hobson; grandson, Dean Allen Garrett; and great-granddaughter, Amanda Shatswell.A special thanks to Livingston Memorial Hospice and all of their caring workers for the wonderful care they gave to Glenn and his family.Graveside services were held May 16 at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery, with Reverends Mike Harris and Francis Boyle of the Free Will Baptist Church officiating."He’s now with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."AmenArrangements under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula.Barbara June BarkerLifelong Santa Paula resident Barbara J. "Bobbie" Barker, 76, passed away suddenly at her residence.Bobbie was born June 19, 1928 in Santa Paula to Ed and Vesta Moser. She graduated from Santa Paula High School. Bobbie was employed by the Ventura County Fire Department with 33 years of service, retiring in 1991, as a executive assistant to the Ventura County Deputy Fire Chief.Bobbie was very active in the community, and will be remembered for her dedication and spirit. She was a volunteer in the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary as a Pink Lady from 1993 until it closed. Bobbie also volunteered for the City of Santa Paula in the finance department for many years, helping in everything from filing to cutting out gingerbread men for decorations. She served on the Ventura County Grand Jury from 1992 to 1993.Bobbie often attended Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Santa Paula. Bobbie was at every grandchild’s sports event. She loved to watch sports on TV, especially tennis. Bobbie enjoyed the company and friendship from the girls and parents of the Santa Paula High School Varsity Softball team.Most importantly, Bobbie loved and enjoyed spending time with her family, who will miss her deeply. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Sealy and Larry Wilkinson of Phoenix, Arizona; son and daughter-in-law Steven and Joann Barker of Mohave Valley, AZ; daughter and son-in-law Sharon Barker-Tubbs and Paul Tubbs of Santa Paula; brother and sister-in-law Gene and Nancy Moser of Ojai; grandchildren, Dawn, Tom, Brian, Chris, Michael, Victor, James, Calvin, Nianna, Patrick and Brenna; eight great-grandchildren; and a loving aunt, Ethel Rounds of Ventura.Visitation will be Thursday, May 19 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula Street.
Graveside services will be Friday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery, with the Reverend Barry Barnes of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church officiating.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary.John D ThompsonJohn D Thompson, born September 24, 1931 in Childress, Texas, passed away May 14, 2005.John graduated from Santa Clara Elementary School (aka the Little Red Schoolhouse) between Fillmore and Santa Paula, and graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1951. He played baseball and football at Santa Paula High School, anchoring both offense and defense. He was offered a full scholarship to Southern Methodist University after his senior year, in which the SPHS team was CIF champions. John, affectionately known as "Turk" by his teammates, played offensive tackle and defensive guard.John retired from General Telephone Co., where he worked for over 30 years. For many years, he was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church; more recently, John was an active member of the Life Way Baptist Church in Santa Paula.John was a rail enthusiast, and especially enjoyed watching trains circle "the Loop" just outside Tehachapi. He could identify any boxcar or engine and tell avid listeners the history, origin and cargo hauled by each.John was particularly proud of his extended family, and enjoyed visiting in Bakersfield, Elko and locally with his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, long time Ventura County residents D. L. And Hassie (Briscoe) Thompson. John was married May 5, 1956 to Virginia (Pyle) Countryman, who also preceded him in death.John is survived by sons Dale Countryman (wife Rebecca) from Bakersfield, Dan Thompson (wife Janet) from Elko, Nevada, and David Thompson from Dunsmuir; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister Eileen Hess of Sacramento; and brother Carl L. Thompson of Camarillo. His beloved dog, Mr. Bates, loyally accompanied John on his many day trips.Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18 at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula Street. Private family burial is scheduled for a later date.In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ronald McDonald House or the American Cancer Society.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, Santa Paula.
