When asked what education means to him, he replied, “when I was in the Peace Corp my travels took me to different parts of the South Pacific where I witnessed deprivations of poverty from lack of education and poor health, I was struck by the realization that much of this depravation comes in many forms, some emotional, some physical, and that education and health care are the most powerful tool for enriching one’s environment, I knew that my life’s work would always include efforts to improve life through health care and education. I can continue my efforts by serving on the Santa Paula High School Board.”

Doug Jackson was born in Pasadena, California and moved to Santa Paula when he was six months old so that his father Gilbert Jackson could start his veterinary practice. Doug attended elementary and high school in Santa Paula and played tennis and basketball for Santa Paula High School where he lettered four-years in varsity tennis and three years in basketball. Completing a 25-year career in the military he has returned to his roots with his lovely wife Tama’a and two of their three children.
Doug received an outstanding education from the public schools in Santa Paula and feels that the diversity of Santa Paula instilled in him an appreciation for all people and a love of this town. Now with children of his own in public school he feels a burning desire to serve his community by running for the open seat on the high school board that has been vacant by the passing of Al Sandoval a devoted civic- minded Santa Paulan.His father Gilbert Jackson was a well-known and beloved veterinarian in Santa Paula who served on the Santa Paula High School Board during the 1970’s. Following in his dad’s footsteps Doug wants to make a positive contribution by giving back to the town that did so much for he and his family.Doug is a man of great accomplishments both professionally and personally. He graduated from University of California Santa Barbara in 1973 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. He entered the Peace Corps after graduation in 1973 and worked for three years in the Kingdom of Tonga, learning to speak Tongan fluently, it was in Tonga that he met and married his wife Tama’a in 1976. Doug returned to Santa Paula in 1977 until returning to school in 1978 to Cal-State Chico, earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.In 1980 Doug went into the military to serve his country as a nurse practitioner traveling through the United States and aboard. Doug is retiring as a Colonel from the Army this month from Port Hueneme Naval Ambulatory Care Center where he was responsible for the planning and provision of health care for more than 13,000 patients in the Ventura County area. During his military career he continued his life long commitment to learning earning 2 Master Degrees; one from Central Michigan University and one from University of California, Los Angeles.Doug has had extensive experience as a teacher and administrator in numerous capacities beginning with a teaching position in Tonga teaching math, biology, and Assistant Principal, upon his return to the United States in 1977 he taught general science and chemistry. While at UCLA he volunteered to serve as a Teaching Assistant. Most recently Doug was Assistant Professor at the Uniform Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD where he was responsible for teaching primary health care and nursing principles required for Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, and Clinical Nurse Specialist students. While holding that position he played a key role as chairman for the university’s curriculum committee developing the curriculum for it’s graduate school.Doug has received numerous awards and honors from 1982 to present:* 2005 - Distinguished Alumni, College of Natural Sciences, California State University, Chico.* 2003 - Dean’s Teacher Award, Uniform Services University of the Health Sciences.* 2001- Congressional Fellowship United States Senate.
