Carrera was the high scorer for the Cards with 18 points. He had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Urrutia hit for 14 points and had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Lara was held to 13 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Ben Kolbeck tossed in 12 points, with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Daniel Kolbeck and Bobby Benevides each had 2 points. Hernandez had 1 point.Despite the Rosamond defensive effort, the Cardinals held their lead until the end. At the half Santa Paula had a 27-20 lead.
Boys varsity takes third at annual Fillmore tourney

The Cardinal boys’ varsity basketball team placed third at the annual Fillmore Varsity Tournament last week.
It was a tough-fought tourney from the first game to the last. Santa Paula started out with a 56-49 win over L.A. Baptist. Chepe Lara led the way with 25 points for the game and 8 rebounds. Andrew Carrera hit for 12 points and had 4 rebounds and 5 assists. He also had 3 steals. Johnny Carrillo shot 8 points, Daniel Kolbeck had 4, Johnny Urrutia had 3 and Ben Kolbeck and Richard Hernandez each added 2 points to the winning effort.In their next game the Cards lost to Westlake 62-40.Lara had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists in that contest. Carrera had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Hernandez had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Carrillo had 3 points and 2 assists and Urrutia had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist.Westlake was ahead 27-19 at the half and despite a renewed effort, Santa Paula couldn’t catch up.The Cards beat Rosamond High for third place, winning 62-44.
