Organizers from the Santa Paula Union High School Class of 1966 are seeking Cardinal Alumni for their upcoming 40-year reunion weekend get together to be held August 18 through 20, 2006. SPUHS Class of 1966 Correspondent Sally (Samways) Cook says a fantastic reunion is planned. According to Cook, whose husband is Santa Paula Mayor Rick Cook, events being explored now include a Rincon Beach party, viewing classic football game and prom dance movies, screening a feature film “Jupiter Landing” produced by classmate Billie Jean (Single) Harsch, a dinner dance party and a casual BBQ at Steckle Park. Marsha (Richards) Cavender says she planned the entertainment years in advance by booking award-winning Bruce Barrios four years ago as MC for the party to be held at the Marriott Courtyard. Irma (Reyes) Romero is developing the decorations and centerpieces and says, “This is going to be the best and most memorable reunion event we have ever had.”Classmate Gerry Griffin has collected years of Santa Paula High memorabilia and converted old prom movies and football game highlights to DVD and will be showing those during the weekend. Griffin, who was a star running back on the SPUHS championship team, says. “You have to remember that 1966 was one of those rare years when Santa Paula made it all the way to CIF Playoffs, so we are very proud of our class and our accomplishments.” Dr. Dick Yamamoto, who has a dental practice in Santa Paula, and Leo Gutierrez of Fillmore, are making arrangements for the park outing. Jeff Price of Oxnard, retired Ranger and Park Superintendent, is preparing the flyer to be mailed out in a few weeks and has been locating long-lost classmates. “The most remarkable contact with my 283 fellow graduates was with former Foreign Exchange student, Ximena Ancic, who is now a medical doctor in her home country of Chile. She will be flying up in August for the celebration. The most distressing thing has been the discovery that seventeen of my classmates are deceased,” says Price. “Other Cardinal classmate discoveries include finding Alan Mashburn as a City Mayor in Utah, Otis Burden as a federal agent in Arkansas, Gordon Onstot an oil company representative in Kazakhstan, Gary LeTellier managing an airport in Oregon, Terry (Portlock) Freberg a School Counselor in Nevada, Gary Hughes running a nuclear power plant in Missouri and Ken Cook running Gold Coast Ambulance right here in Ventura County.”If you want more information or know a 1966 Santa Paula High graduate who would like to attend, you may visit the 1966 Cardinals Class website at www.jprice.net/cardinals66/ or telephone Sally (Samways) Cook (805) 525-2393, Marsha (Richards) Cavender (805) 525-9845 or Jeff Price (805) 278-9201.
