The Santa Paula varsity boys went 0-3 at last week’s annual Fillmore Varsity Basketball Tournament. The Cardinals came close but couldn’t hold on for a win. In their first game they met up with L.A. Baptist and lost 46-42. Travis Marella led in scoring with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Daniel Kolbeck had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Ben Kolbeck had 9 points and 3 rebounds. Daniel Pachuca added 6 points for the Cards. It was the Cardinals and the Fillmore Flashes in game two. Fillmore pulled out a 51-42 win in the consolation round game. Marella again led in scoring for Santa Paula with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Daniel Kolbeck had 8 points and 9 rebounds, Ben Kolbeck hit for 7 points and had 5 rebounds, Pachuca had 7 points, Adrian Quiroz had 6 points and Omar Arista had 3 points and 5 rebounds. In Santa Paula’s final game they played Channel Islands. The Raiders won 55-39. Daniel and Ben Kolbeck both had 14 points. Daniel had 8 rebounds Ben had 5. Pachuca hit for 7 points.Three problems continue to plague the Cards: fouls, turnovers and missed shots. Too many of their best players are getting into foul trouble and in many cases fouling out of the game. Bad passes are causing unnecessary turnovers and, too often shots at the hoop are missing the mark.
The boys are off this week and travel to Pacifica High School next Monday. The varsity lost 62-49 against Pacifica earlier this month.
