By Brian D. WilsonSanta Paula TimesSeveral teachers told Santa Paula Elementary School District Trustees at this months’ meeting that safety is not a major problem at Isbell Middle School. Some parents expressed concerns at Decembers’ board meeting about the safety of students. A campus supervisor and the parent of a student at the school told the board that fights are now more frequent, there’s been some sexual harassment and tagging is happening on a daily basis.
Isbell teacher Doug Forster, speaking at last weeks’ meeting said he’s been at Isbell for four years. “Trends at Isbell are trending towards less problems at this school,” he told the board. “I haven’t personally seen a fight at all this year.Parent Anne McInerney said she appreciates the board and Superintendent listening to the concerns and she appreciates the two, new noon supervisors at the school. She said her only concern is that campus security goes off duty before school is out. She added that she feels the staff is doing a great job. “I’m just a little concerned about what can happen after school,” she said.Another teacher, Doug Johnston is in his eighth year at Isbell. He told trustees that when he first came he didn’t plan on staying. He had heard Isbell was a rough and tumble school. “After a month or so I realized it’s a great school,” he noted. “I don’t want to leave. I’ve been very happy teaching at Isbell and all that time I’ve never once feared for my safety.” Johnston said that it’s not all perfect. He broke up a fight in October, the first he’s witnessed this school year. He added that graffiti is a bigger problem on campus than violence. “To our schools’ credit we’ve really gone after that in a big way,” he said. He finished by saying that he wants to stay at Isbell until he retires.
