Little League opens 2007 season with special recognition for two men

The 2007 Santa Paula Little League season opened last Friday night with ceremonies at Richard Ruiz Field. The evening started with the presentation of the “Colors” by members of the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 56. City Council member Bob Gonzalez presented a flag flown over the U.S. Capital and helped to run it up the flagpole.After the Little League Poem and Little League Pledge board president Sheri Salazar introduced board members. She also listed three people who were involved with Little League in the past and who passed away over the last year. They were Henry Galvan, Darren Grant and Eddie Bustoz. Salazar also presented a plaque to the Volunteer of the Year, Mike Reyes.The 2007 season was dedicated to Jerry Burns, who has done much over the years for young people in Santa Paula, both as a teacher and more recently donating to various sports organizations for needed equipment. He paid for the protective cover now on the top of the fencing around Ruiz Field.
Also recognized was Ronnie Brooks who threw out the first pitch in 1957. He and burns each threw a ceremonial first pitch for this year.
