The Isbell Middle School Migrant Education debate team (The Blazing Condors) took First Place at the 5th Annual, Region 17 Migrant Education Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament. The debate topic this year was “Limiting student freedom is necessary to establish a safe school environment. The tourney was held May 4 and 5 at the Marriot Beach Hotel in Ventura. Teachers Shauna Jones and Monica Douglas coached the team. Liz Evans filled in for Douglas at the tournament.Briggs Middle School came in second. Santa Paula High School placed in the top three in their category. Teams competing at the event came from as far away as San Jose, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Bakersfield and Fresno. There were a total of 34 debate teams and 470 students participating. The Isbell team began last year when the students were in 6th grade. They competed against mostly 8th graders and did not win last year. This year they came back and went undefeated all day.
The Santa Paula Rotary Club as well as the Elementary School Board will soon honor the winning students. All of the young people are migrant students with parents who work in the fields. They are all honor students and most of them are interested in careers in law.“Both Ms Douglas and myself are very honored to know and work with these students who were willing to join last year after we asked each of them personally to be a part of the debate team because we believed in them,” Jones said. “Their accomplishment is a direct result of their hard work, dedication and teamwork.”
