Thousands of “children benefit from programs and services provided by the city of Santa Paula” in ways that are social, physical, medical, economic and environmental, noted Luna. The city’s Recreation Department even offers the Santa Paula California Oil Museum, which traces the city’s strong history in the oil industry as well as offering interactive displays and many art and science exhibits. The City of Santa Paula Recreation Department “continues to provide a variety of services, ranging from preschool all the way to senior citizens,” said Yanez. “The recreation staff does a good job, and continues to do so day in and day out.”And doing such fine work can be challenging, with the department being shorthanded, noted Luna.Councilman Ralph Fernandez offered thanks to the Recreation Department “for all you do” that brings so many varied benefits to the “children of Santa Paula.”

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesParks and Recreation Month was celebrated by the City Council, who recognized the positive impact on all aspects of life that such programs incur. Mayor Ray Luna presented the proclamation to Community Services Director Brian Yanez at the July 2 City Council meeting, recognizing the “healthy lifestyles and livable communities” that are the hallmark of recreation programs. The National Recreation and Park Association notes that public parks and recreation systems are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for millions of residents in communities through recreation programming, leisure activities and conservation efforts. Luna said that such programs and activities provide opportunities for “young people to live, grow and develop into contributing members of society, and create lifelines and continuous life experiences for older members of the community.”Luna noted that recreation programs and activities also generate “opportunities for people to come together and experience a sense of community,” and pay dividends to communities by attracting businesses and jobs, as well as increasing home values. Recreation activities “promotes health and wellness,” in turn containing medical costs and promoting emotional growth for young people.
